There’s something about spring in Red Lodge that feels a little unpredictable in the best way possible.
One minute it’s soft sunshine and quiet mountain air, the next minute you’re watching the light disappear behind the Beartooth’s a little later than maybe you expected because each day is gets a little longer this time of year.
Becca & Seth’s engagement session felt exactly like Montana should feel, relaxed, adventurous, wildly beautiful, and completely unforced.
We spent the evening exploring around Greenough Lake just below the start of the Beartooth Pass, surrounded by lingering snowpack, mountain air, and some ridiculously pretty soft light. Early spring in the mountains always feels a little sleepy and peaceful before summer tourism kicks into gear, and honestly, it might be one of my favorite times to photograph couples in Montana.
And these two fit the landscape perfectly.
Becca & Seth are the kind of couple that make photographing engagement sessions easy because they’re genuinely connected. No over-the-top posing. No trying too hard. Just a lot of laughing, wandering around together, and naturally slipping into their own little world every few minutes.
The entire session felt more like hanging out with old friends than “working,” which is a great sign that we’re making something real.
On our drive out we had to pull over to take a look at a couple moose. Then at our first stop, when we were still talking about “posing and prompting”, we noticed movement in the distance… another moose! So we quickly moved on, and that’s one of two reasons I like to carry Bear Spray when working in the area. Later in the evening, came across a small herd of mule deer, and I even caught an elk on my drive home.
Honestly, it felt like Montana was showing off a little.
That’s just one more reasons I love photographing engagement sessions and destination weddings here so much. The mountains don’t just become a backdrop — they become part of the story. The scale, the quiet, the weather, the wildlife… it changes the way a session feels.
And for couples like Becca & Seth, who genuinely love being outdoors together, it all just clicked.
One of my favorite parts of the evening was simply getting time to talk as we walked out to the lake. We chatted about wedding plans, life, relationships, and eventually I drifted into my usual “why I love this job” ramble somewhere along the way.
The truth is, sessions like this are exactly why I care so much about photographing people honestly.
Not perfectly. Honestly.
The big scenic mountain photos are incredible, sure, and Montana makes those easy. But my favorite images are almost always the smaller moments tucked in between them. The laughing fits. The quiet forehead touches. The running down the road to prove who is fastest. The little looks people give each other when they forget the camera exists.
That’s the good stuff!
On my way home, I also stopped by Rock Creek Resort, which recently reopened for weddings after being closed for a couple years. I used to photograph weddings there pretty regularly, so seeing the remodel was honestly so exciting. The updates are gorgeous, and it’s going to be such a fun venue to have back in the Red Lodge wedding scene.
All in all, this session was a pretty perfect reminder of why Montana engagement sessions hit differently.
Big mountains. Wild weather. Wildlife sightings. Real connection.
Hard to beat that.
Hey, I’m Zak — a Montana wedding photographer documenting real moments, big landscapes, and couples who care more about connection than perfect posing. If you’re planning a wedding or engagement session anywhere in Montana (especially places with mountain views and questionable cell service), I’d love to hear your story!
